Record vitamins, herbal medicines, over-the-counter medicines and other supplements on the medication page 

Vitamin and herbal medicine regimen should be recorded in your journal. The medication page is not
reserved for prescription medicines only. The page should be used to record over-the-counter medicines, vitamins,
and other supplements that are taken routinely for health maintenance. You should do research on the supplements you plan to take or currently take. Beware of the side effects and drug interaction issues associated with the supplements. Make your doctor aware of the supplements you take, especially if you're scheduled for surgery.

Echinacea is often used to treat bacterial and viral infections. The herb may suppress the immune system and should not be taken for several weeks before survery, especially organ transplant surgery.

Garlic is used to lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol and boost the immune system but could inhibit blood clotting. Garlic supplements should not be taken for at least a week before surgery. Garlic should not be used if you take blood-thinning medication.

Ginkgo Biloba is used to increase mental alertness and asthma but could inhibit blood clotting. Stop taking ginkgo for at least two days before surgery. Ginkgo should not be used if you take prescription anti-depressants.

Ginseng is often used to boost the immune system and increase mental alertness. Ginseng should not be used if you take prescription anti-depressants or blood-thinning medication. It could also cause insomina and low blood sugar. Stop taking ginseng at least a week before surgery.
